Students from the Anthropology Club at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign celebrated Anthropology Day by reaching out to the community! Part of their activity for the day was a visit to Centennial High School and Lindsay Aikman’s senior AVID class. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national program focused on college and career readiness and closing the opportunity gap for high school students.
Our student group, comprised of Jocelyn Rubi, Sofia Rivera, Mearieta Clemente, Miles Ury, Edgar Vea, Dan Leonard, and Harold Adams was accompanied by Professors Andrew Orta and Brandon Ritchison. They proud Anthro Club members talked to these young prospective peers about their college experiences, their passion for anthropology and the exciting career prospects which await anthropology graduates.
The visit reinforced our group’s commitment to maintain strong bonds with the community. More high-school visits and community engagement activities are being planned. Stay tuned!
